Raphael was an italian Renaissance painter and architect. Born in 1483 in Urbino, Italy, to a father who was also a painter. From a young age, his father taught him to paint. When Raphael was 11, his father died and he took over his workshop, eventually becoming one of the best painters in his community. In 1504, he was invited to Florence to become an apprentice to Perugino, and started his series of Madonnas, which were based on the work of Leonardo Da Vinci. From 1509-1511, he was living in Rome and painted the Stanza Della Segnatura, in the palace of the Vatican. In 1514, he was hired by Pope Julius II to d the chief architect of the Vatican. This is also the year he finished his Madonna series, the Sistine Madonna.
